Lesson 32
32.1. The Past Tenses
In older Sanskrit literature and among native grammarians, the three past tenses are clearly distinguished in their usage:
- the Aorist (लुङ् , अद्यतनी) denotes either simply the completion of an action or what happened on the current day, the near past
- the Imperfect (लङ्) denotes what happened before the current day, the distant past
- the Perfect (लिट्) denotes, like the Imperfect, the distant past, but is used, in contrast to the Imperfect, only for events that the speaker himself has not witnessed
In classical Sanskrit literature, the three past tenses are used without distinction of meaning (exception: भारवि's poetic work किरातार्जुनीय).
32.2. The Imperfect (लङ्)
Formation:
Augment a- + Present stem + Secondary ending
The three singular persons of the Parasmaipada Imperfect are formed from the strong present stem for athematic stems; all other forms are formed from the weak present stem.
The Imperfect has only the Indicative.
Examples:
भू 3. sg. Impf. P. अभवत् (a-bhava-t)
सु
- sg. Impf. P. असुनोत् (a-suno-t)
- pl. Impf. P. असुन्वन् (a + sunu + an)
32.3. Rules for the Augment
1. If the augment a- precedes a root beginning with a vowel, the augment and the initial sound of the root merge to form the वृद्धि of the root vowel.
Examples:
| 3. sg. Impf. | 3. pl. Impf. | |
|---|---|---|
| इष् | ऐच्छत् (a- + iccha-t) | |
| इ | ऐत् (a- + e + t) | आयन् (a + i + an) |
| आस् | आस्त (a + ās-ta) |
2. If prepositions precede a root, the augment a- appears after the prepositions, immediately before the root.
Examples:
| 3. sg. Impf. | |
|---|---|
| आगम् | आगच्छत् (ā + a + gaccha-t) |
| संगम् | समगच्छत् (sam-a-gaccha-t) |
| उपगम् | उपागच्छत् (upa + a + gaccha-t) |
| उपागम् | उपागच्छत् (upa + ā + a + gaccha-t) |
32.4. Examples of Imperfect Formation
To demonstrate the formation of forms, Ātmanepada forms are also created here for Parasmaipada roots! These artificial forms stand between < >.
32.4.1. Thematic Present Classes
| Presentklasse | Root धातु | 3. sg. P. | 3. pl. P. | 3. sg. Ā. | 3. pl. Ā. |

| 10. / Caus. | चुर् | अचोरयत् | अचोरयन् | अचोरयत | अचोरयन्त |
