Vowel signs for the beginning of a word, if the word is not connected in writing with a preceding word:
Consonant Ligatures
If two or more consonants follow immediately on each other within a word or sentence, they are written with a ligature (combined character).
- If the first of the consonant signs to be combined ends with the vertical stroke on the right, it loses this stroke and is placed before the second consonant.
Exception: if the second consonant sign is न् or ल्, this is placed under the first consonant sign, losing the horizontal stroke. Depending on the font, there are further exceptions, which are listed below. If a ligature is not provided for the relevant font, a Virāma is inserted.
