Exercise 45

A) Translate into Sanskrit (use the imperfect for the past tense):

. सङ्घं भिनत्सि
You split the (Buddhist) community.

. किं महीमभुङ्क्त
Have you enjoyed the earth?

. किं राज्ञो दानमादत्थाः (Or: ... राज्ञा ...)
Have you received a gift from the king?

. साधो कस्माद्भयेभ्यो बिभेषि
Holy man, why do you not fear dangers?

. पितः कुत्र गच्छन्कुलं जहासि
Father, where are you going as you leave the family?

. शूद्रे ऽपि धनिनो ब्राह्मणस्य गृहं भारमबिभः
Śūdra woman, have you perhaps carried the burden into the house of the rich Brāhmaṇa?

. देवि कृतपुण्यस्य वैश्यस्य सुखेष्टिं पिपूर्याः
Goddess, you should fulfill the wish for happiness of the Vaiśya, who has done meritorious deeds.

. हस्तिनो बन्धनानि भञ्ज्यात (Or: ... भिन्द्यात )
Elephants, you should not break the bonds.

. नरसिंह कस्माद्ब्रह्मणि समादधासि
You lion-like man, why do you not direct your attention entirely to the Absolute?

१०. कवे कच्चिल्लोकानमिमीथाः १०
Have you, O poet, perhaps measured the worlds?

B) Translate:

. अर्जुन हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीं तस्माद्भवता योध्यम्
Arjuna, either you will be killed and attain heaven, or you will win and enjoy the earth. Therefore, fighting is to be done by you (you must fight).

. भवति कथमनन्तदुःखमरुणत्
Venerable one, how have you ended the infinite suffering?

. ब्राह्मण किमग्नौ घृतमजुहोः
Brāhmaṇa, have you poured ghee into the sacrificial fire?

. शत्रो शस्तेण जीवं छिनत्सि
Enemy, with the sword you do not split the soul (life).
