Second Rule for the Formation of Consonant Ligatures

[First rule see in Writing Exercise 8]

If the first of the consonants to be combined does not end with a vertical stroke, then the following consonant is placed under the first consonant, losing its horizontal stroke.

Exceptions: If म् or य् is the second member of the ligature, they are written shortened after the first character:

क्म kma, ङ्म ṅma, द्म dma, ह्म hma, क्य kya, छ्य chya, द्य dya, ह्य hya

Remember:

क्त kta, त्त tta, द्द dda, द्ध ddha, द्न dna, द्भ dbha, ह्न hna, द्व dva, ह्व hva

क्ष kṣa, ज्ञ jña, ण्ण ṇṇa, ह्ण hṇa
