A) Translate the सुभाषितानि at the beginning of the lesson:
१. विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद्याति पात्रताम् ।
पात्रत्वाद्धनमाप्नोति धनाद्धर्मं ततः सुखम् ॥ १ ॥
Knowledge leads to proper conduct; because of proper conduct, one becomes worthy of honor; when one is worthy of honor, one becomes wealthy; when one is wealthy, one becomes righteous — and from this follows happiness.
२. सुखार्थी चेत्त्यजेद्विद्यां विद्यार्थी चेत्त्यजेत्सुखम् ।
सुखार्थिनः कुतो विद्या कुतो विद्यार्थिनः सुखम् ॥ २ ॥
If one abandons knowledge in the search for happiness, or if one abandons happiness in the search for knowledge: whence should a seeker of happiness then have knowledge, and whence a seeker of knowledge happiness?
३. आचार्यात्पादमादत्ते पादं शिष्यः स्वमेधया ।
पादं सब्रह्मचारिभ्यः पादं कालक्रमेण च ॥ ३ ॥
A student receives one quarter (of knowledge) from his teacher, one quarter through his own intellect, one quarter from his fellow students, and one quarter through the course of time.
