Exercise 45

A) Translate into Sanskrit (use the imperfect for past tense):

. सङ्घं भिनत्सि ॥ १ ॥
You are dividing the (Buddhist) community.

. किं महीमभुङ्क्त ॥ २ ॥
Have you enjoyed the earth?

. किं राज्ञो दानमादत्थाः ॥ ३ ॥ (Or: ... राज्ञा ...)
Have you received a gift from the king?

. साधो कस्माद्भयेभ्यो न बिभेषि ॥ ४ ॥
Holy man, why do you not fear dangers?

. पितः कुत्र गच्छन्कुलं जहासि ॥ ५ ॥
Father, where are you going as you leave the family?

. शूद्रे ऽपि धनिनो ब्राह्मणस्य गृहं भारमबिभः ॥ ६ ॥
Śūdra woman, have you perhaps carried the load into the house of the rich Brāhmaṇa?

. देवि कृतपुण्यस्य वैश्यस्य सुखेष्टिं पिपूर्याः ॥ ७ ॥
Goddess, you should fulfill the desire for happiness of the Vaiśya who has performed merit.

. हस्तिनो बन्धनानि न भञ्ज्यात ॥ ८ ॥ (Or: ... न भिन्द्यात ॥)
Elephants, you should not break the fetters.

. नरसिंह कस्माद्ब्रह्मणि न समादधासि ॥ ९ ॥
You lion-like man, why do you not direct your attention entirely to the Absolute?

१०. कवे कच्चिल्लोकानमिमीथाः ॥ १० ॥
Have you, O poet, perhaps measured the worlds?

B) Translate:

. अर्जुन हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीं । तस्माद्भवता योध्यम् ॥ १ ॥
Arjuna, either you will be killed and attain heaven, or you will conquer and enjoy the earth. Therefore fighting is to be done by you (you must fight).

. भवति कथमनन्तदुःखमरुणत् ॥ २ ॥
Venerable one, how have you ended infinite suffering?

. ब्राह्मण किमग्नौ घृतमजुहोः ॥ ३ ॥
Brahmin, did you pour ghee into the sacrificial fire?

. शत्रो शस्तेण जीवं न छिनत्सि ॥ ४ ॥
Enemy, you do not split the soul (life) with the sword.
