Vowel signs for the beginning of a word, if the word is not written connected to a preceding word:

Consonant Ligatures

If two or more consonants follow immediately upon each other in a word or sentence, they are written with a ligature (combined sign).

1. If the first of the consonant signs to be combined ends with a vertical stroke on the right, it loses this stroke and is placed before the second consonant.

Exception: if the second consonant sign is न् or ल्, this is placed under the first consonant sign with loss of the horizontal stroke. Depending on the font, there are further exceptions listed below. If a ligature is not provided for in the relevant font, a virāma is placed.
