Exercise 21

A) Resolve the following Sanskrit compounds and translate them:

. अनादिकालिकसंसरः । अनादिः कालो यस्य सो ऽनादिकालिकः संसरः ।
The course through rebirths without beginning and fixed duration.

. अनादिमध्यान्तः । न आदिश्च मध्यं च अन्तश्च यस्य सः ।
Without beginning, middle and end.

. महामैत्रीकरुणाचित्तः । महती मैत्री च करुणा च यस्मिंस्तच्चित्तं यस्य सः ।
With a heart full of great benevolence and compassion.

. सर्वहतान्धकारः । सर्वस्मिन्हतो ऽन्धकारो येन सः ।
Who has destroyed the darkness everywhere.

B) Translate:

. मृतं दहन्नग्निः सतीमपि दहति ॥
The fire that burns the dead also burns the faithful wife (satī).

. सद्गुरुर्महाकविस्तोत्रैर्महादेवं स्तौति ॥
The good master praises the great god with hymns of praise by the great poets.

. महान्ति फलान्यदन्तो बाला जलमापि पिबन्ति ॥
The boys who eat great fruits also drink water.

. पुजां कुर्वञ्जनो यजते च स्तौति च देवताम् ॥
During the worship, the man offers sacrifice and praises the deity.

. गुरूपनीतनरो द्विजः ॥
A twice-born is a man who has been initiated into the Veda by his teacher.

He who has conquered anger does not hate an enemy, even if the latter kills him. But he who is conquered by anger hates.
