A householder should:
- have a livelihood appropriate to his specific dharma
- enter into a marriage alliance with persons of equal status from another gotra (Ṛṣi)
- have sexual intercourse with his wife during her fertile periods
- honor the gods, forefathers, and guests
- be generous toward those dependent on him
- and eat what remains.
A celibate Vedic student should:
- study the Veda
- ritually maintain the fire
- perform sprinkling rites
- keep the vow to live on almsfood
- reside with his Ācārya and care for him until the teacher's death, or live with the master's son or a fellow student.
A forest hermit should:
- live celibately
- lie on the bare earth
- wear matted hair and an antelope skin
- perform fire sacrifices and sprinkling rites
- honor the gods, forefathers, and guests
- nourish himself on forest products.
A homeless wandering ascetic should:
- conquer his senses
- begin nothing new
- be without any possession
- abandon all attachment
- keep the vow to live on almsfood
- dwell in many places in the wilderness
- be inwardly and outwardly pure.

Therefore, the king should not cause beings to deviate from their specific dharma. For whoever fulfills his specific dharma rejoices after death and in this life. When the order of the noble ones is established, when castes and stages of life are made permanent, then the world protected by the three Vedas lives peacefully and does not perish.
Reflections of the Parrot वैशम्पायन on the life of a hunter:
And it came to my awareness: Ah, their [the hunters'] life consists mainly of delusion and their conduct is censured by the good. Thus: They consider the offering of human flesh to be true religion; their food consists in honey wine, meat and similar things censured by the good; their endeavor is hunting; their teaching work is the howling of jackals; owls are their teachers of good and evil; their wisdom is ornithology; their intimates are dogs; their realm is in empty forests; their feast is intoxication; their friends are bows that accomplish cruel deeds; their companions are arrows whose tips are smeared with poison like snakes; their song brings destruction to bewildered game; their women are the abducted young girls of others; they dwell together with cruel tigers; they worship the deities with animal blood; they offer meat as sacrificial gifts; they live by plunder; their ornament is serpent gems; they rub their limbs with the rutting juice of forest elephants; every forest in which they settle, they uproot completely – While I was thus reflecting, the general of the Śabaras entered.
